What’s coming up in the world of BJJ in July 2021?

We’ve got you covered for all your BJJ-related news and upcoming events for July 2021. Check out what the BJJ world has in store for you!

Road to ADCC (17 July 2021)

FloGrappling will host a Road to the ADCC event in mid-July – leading up to the ADCC trials (which will begin in Fall 2021), and ultimately the ADCC Worlds in 2022.

In the main event, Kaynan Duarte (2019 ADCC champion at +99kg) will take on Matheus Diniz (2019 ADCC champion at 88kg).

The Road to the ADCC card will consist of 6 super fights in total, with matchups between some of the best no-gi grapplers in the world right now. All matches will follow the ADCC ruleset.

Here are all the matchups currently set for the card:

  •     Kaynan Duarte vs Matheus Diniz
  •     Craig Jones vs Lucas Hulk Barbosa
  •     Nicky Ryan vs Dante Leon
  •     Elisabeth Clay vs Ana Carolina Vieira
  •     Mikey Musumeci vs Geo Martinez
  •     Roberto Jimenez vs Andrew Wiltse

The excitement around the ADCC Worlds is definitely starting to heat up. This is especially the case since defending ADCC Absolute Superfight Champion Andre Galvao recently confirmed that he will defend his title at the next ADCC Worlds event – regardless of the opponent.

If Gordon Ryan gets healthy in time, will we see the epic clash the grappling world has been waiting for? If not, who will challenge Galvao for the most prestigious title in submission grappling?

Finishers Sub-Only Open 6 (Emerald City Qualifier) (25 July 2021)

Finishers Open 6 is hosting an open tournament at the end of July, with competitive divisions for all belts and various weight classes for both men and women. The July event will also hold a qualifying tournament for the Emerald City Invitational 145lbs tournament.

The winner of the qualifier tournament at Finishers Open 6 gets entrance and paid travel and hotel to the Emerald City Invitational in August and $1,000. And, of course, the qualifying athlete earns themselves an opportunity to compete for a shiny, jewel-encrusted belt and a $10,000 cash prize!

The last Emerald City Invitational tournament was at 170lbs and saw 10th Planet’s PJ Barch submit his way to claiming the championship belt.

Who will be the 145lbs champ in August? And who will earn their way into the tournament through the Finishers Open? Follow this link to register for the competition.

IBJJF – July Events

The IBJJF appears to be back to a regular schedule after a bumpy year of COVID-19 restrictions.

Here’s what the IBJJF has going on in July:

  •     IBJJF Chicago International Open (Gi and No-Gi) (10-11 July 2021)
  •     IBJJF Austin International Open (Gi and No-Gi) (17-18 July 2021)
  •     IBJJF Orlando Summer International Open (Gi and No-Gi) (22-23 July 2021)
  •     IBJJF Pan Kids Championship (Gi) (24-25 July 2021)
  •     IBJJF Phoenix International Open (Gi and No-Gi) (31 July 2021)

The IBJJF also recently announced that they will be hosting the World No-Gi Championships in the Fall (7-10 October 2021). With this, their first World Championship tournament since the hiatus due to the COVID-19 outbreak, will we see more high-level grapplers begin to enter local IBJJF tournaments in preparation for the Worlds in the Fall?

At that, what will the World No-Gi Championships look like with heel hooks now being allowed in the brown and black belt divisions? Will we see a Danaher Death Squad takeover? Or will a new team emerge as the kings and queens of the no-gi scene?
